Statement by John Bozzella, President and CEO, Global Automakers on Behalf of Here for America on Administration’s Announcement to Impose New Tariffs on Chinese Goods
WASHINGTON, D.C., September 17, 2018 – “Applying an additional $200 billion in tariffs on China’s exports to the United States will further harm the U.S. auto industry and American workers and consumers. Retaliation by China to tariffs already in place has made U.S. auto exports uncompetitive and will eliminate our bilateral auto trade surplus. We support the Administration’s efforts to negotiate long-term solutions to the serious issues of IP protection and investment restrictions but are concerned that escalating trade tensions will not produce the desired results.”
Here For America tells the story of international automakers and dealers, their ever-growing impact on the U.S. economy, and the benefits they provide to local communities. The contributions of international automakers and dealers are integral to the success of today’s U.S. auto industry, directly employing 1.29 million Americans in the auto industry and an additional 7 million indirect workers. Here for America is an initiative of the Association of Global Automakers to increase public education about the importance of international automakers to American job creation, economic growth, technological innovation and strong communities.
