New Risks for Trump on Trade
The Trump administration is due to release a report by Feb. 17 that will address whether automotive imports threaten national security. The premise is absurd, but Trump has the authority to declare imports a national security threat, which would then allow him to place tariffs on those imports as a remedy. And Tariff Man, as Trump calls himself, believes tariffs will stimulate more domestic manufacturing, even though many economists say he’s wrong. So tariffs on auto imports could be coming.
