Statement by John Bozzella, President and CEO of Global Automakers and spokesperson for Here For America

Washington D.C. August 23, 2019-“The issues the President has raised regarding market access to China—notably intellectual property rights and majority ownership restrictions, among others—need to be addressed.

The tit-for-tat tariffs, absent any meaningful negotiations, are damaging to the American auto industry. When these tariffs were initially imposed by China in 2018, American exports of finished vehicles dropped by 50 percent. We can’t let that happen to American workers again. If those tariffs go back into effect and remain in effect, American jobs are at risk. There’s no question about that.

Americans are exporting more vehicles to China than China exports to the U.S. We have a chance to keep winning here. But a tariff fight sets this progress back.”
