TARIFFS ARE TAXES ON THE AMERICAN PEOPLE

NO CAR TAX
A tariff is a tax and will raise prices on all domestically produced vehicles as well as imported vehicles. Higher prices will hurt American consumers and American auto workers. Retaliation by our trading partners is likely and will multiply this harm. Tariff hikes would be a real shock to the system. Hard-working Americans should not have to pay for tariffs. A 25% tariff on imported cars would1:

  • Increase the price of an average imported vehicle by as much as $7,000
  • Impose a $73 billion tax increase, effectively wiping out the benefits of tax reform
  • Cost the U.S. auto industry up to 2 million annual vehicle and parts sales
  • Lead to the loss of 714,000 U.S. jobs

Fourteen auto companies produce cars and trucks in the United States today. No automaker or auto parts supplier asked for tariff protections. The industry is thriving. U.S. automakers are:

  • Building vehicles (10.9 million vehicles built in 2017)
  • Selling vehicles (17.2 million vehicles sold in 2017)
  • Exporting vehicles (1.9 million vehicles exported in 2017)
  • Investing ($10.2 billion in U.S. investments announced in 2017)
  • Growing (67% growth in the last 10 years)
